Just been to robben island, not much to say than boy does it open your eyes to the racism in South africa. we were shown around the prison saw nelson mandela’s cell and tols real stories….by an ex prisoner – jailed 20 years for being a suspect terrorist! it was a brutal place thank god things are changing – but remember it was only 20 years since closed…
today we lost most of the truck as this is where most get off and travel alone – we were but chose to stay, its kinda sad especially as the africa tour was the highlight of my year – just 2 weeks til oz though
just quickly say – the rest of cape town is beautiful sea, sity mountain is fantastic – il head to the top tomorrow if the cable cars are open otherwise i may go for the serious hike!! thats all for now – cape town is awesome
OK so as my dad quite rightly pointed out i need a shave….however there is this little thing called movember, mostly an antipodean thing which is making its way to the UK so with a little peer pressure all the blokes have decided to take part. originally it is designed to raise awareness about prostate cancer but we i think are doing it for fun. the idea? grow a mustache, that simple and it looks shocking but hey why not? not like im trying to impress right?
maybe thats not the truth too. Ive done the unthinkable. lets just say she makes me smile and we both understand that soon il be off to Australia. doesnt mean it will end there. We’ll just take it as it comes and enjoy now.
So what else has happened since my last post? I went quad biking across the dunes and that was amazing too. we went on a guided tour of a place called sossusflei a rdied up river bed with 600 year old dead trees (actually a film shot from the cell a recent movie) nice scenery there plus 2 sunsets on dune 45 and fish river canyon something quite spectacular! nothing much else as its only been a few days but we are now in south africa, stellenbosch which is about an hour away from cape town where we will spend almost a week in total. and then we lose half the truck, the passenger that is. that will be strange.
I have just had the best day ever! sandboarding in the morning and sky diving in the afternoon! I promised id get this in here but its hard to explain, you kow when you want to do something again and again but can’t? Its almost tempting just to pull out the tent and hide away from it all! Again again is all i can say.
We left early ish for africa’s version of snow boarding, and bearing in mind i was always the kid with one knee on his skateboard i wasnt too hopeful of pulling anything off – but i think i held my own. in fact the camera guy makes it look as though i was a pro. but believe me when i say he took his shots well. the best 20 quid i ever sppent, it came with a free dvd too. the lying down cersion however you cannot fail to master unless you wipe out like ben! 75 Km/h down a slope is amazing! beats sledges down the the 3 sisters any day!!
Checkout the photos at the bottom!
Now i want a ski season. and flying lessons. and i want to sky dive again. and whitewater raft. and im looking forward to the bungee.
The sky diving was surreal. i wasnt so much nervous as excited but sitting on the edge of the plane you have no time to think as the guy just pushes us both out and for the next 5000 ft or 30 or so seconds we just fall. the wind i roaring and you dont want it to stop, you dont see much as the grounmd gets closer but when he pulls his chute a little jerk and then it is so calm you wouldnt believe. the guy even loosens your strapping, “hang on a minute” you are thinking but they make you feel really safe the slow drift to earth is the most peaceful and calm moment i have ever had. you can see for miles and it is practically silent except for the few swear words i hadnt managed to squeeze out during free fall. AGAIN AGAIN!
Oh we saw cheetahs too. almost sounds dull but it wasnt we were waiting for this all trip, ok so we kinda cheated and went to a sanctuary were they are well looked after but technically they are still wild – except for the fat pet ones as you can see on my photos! and we saw hundreds of seals and they stink at cape cross. then we went swimming in the coldest water i have ever felt….without thinking that the predators of seals could be lurking!!
I remember reading about this knowing it was towards the end of the trip and it would take ages to come around. it just hasnt. it flew by and im kinda upset its drawing to a close, il just keep smiling though and looking forward to the next chapter!
